January 19, 2006 at 4:41 pmI feel you Barend. Good points for sure. Yes floating point / OpenEXR support is excellent. That being said, I would expect upgrades like that to be in Shake, Nuke, and Fusion. True, that AE is used by the most high end of clients. But knowing that the vast majority is used by people who use it for purposes other than what a super high end compositor is used for I feel they should have thrown in a few more things for them. Yes all will benefit from the changes in AE7. But If you ask the average motion graphics artist if they would rather have a better render engine or finally a good color corrector, tracker, and roto tools and I can’t help but think they would pick the second.
I applaud Adobe for adding such high end features as 32 bit float. But it seems contridictory to the fact there still is not anything remotely close to a modern color corrector built in to AE.
I appreciate what they’ve added but considering the time they have I think they should have allocated a few more guys to the project to throw us some long needed bones.
Maybe I say this because for me AE is a graphics program. When I do FX compositing it’s in the DS or Shake. So for what I use AE for I felt a little let down.

Well, that argument could be pointed anywhere… when I do capture I use Premiere Pro so I don’t need capture in AE. When I need 3D I’ll use Maya… Well you get the point 🙂
I understand your point, but the thing is, I prefer to do my FX compositing in AE. And there’s many people with me. There’s actually a lot of high-end users doing visual effects and compositing in After Effects, who prefer AE over Shake, or Fusion for their own reasons.
I think the unique power in AE is that it can perform as a high-end compositing tool (and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise), a motiongraphics and design tool, previz, still editing…
I love that I can work with the same tool regardless of my state of mind. And these new features mean I can continue to do so, at a higher productivity level, and higher quality.
But there’s nothing trivial about the new UI, and this will have a huge impact on everyones productivity. And given the choice between this interface and a new color corrector, I’d easily pick the new UI.
Improved masking is high on my list, just like a mature integrated color corrector. Hopefully those will make it next time around.

January 19, 2006 at 6:37 pmHaving used AE 7 for a bit now, I have to say that the chnages in the interface are sooooo much better. I’m working on a tutorial now, and in running through the example project which I will be vid-capping, I am finding it so much easier to get to what I need to. My paletes dont disappear on me, and if I want to bring up a whole new workspace, with other palletes, it’s instant gratification.
The More I use trhe UI, the more I’m relying on it, and as I went back to AE 6.5 to try something, I was completely annoyed with how painful it is to use the older UI compared to the new one.
The new grpah editor, makes working with multiple layers and their keyframes much easier. Again, it’s gotten to the point where I hate going back to the old UI.
It saves time. And for me, where my turn around time on many projects is too fast for comfort, that’s a huge thing.
Ands people keep talking about how AE isn’t a high-end tool. I don’t even know what that means anymore… I don’t know a single animation house or advertising group that doesn’t use it her in NY. Granted they have other solutions there as well, and even mix and match software in the production process (who doesn’t), but many of them are using AE to produce high-quality material (MoGrpah, FX, Compositing) that is unmatched in the industry.
Is this release perfect? No. I would have killed for a better motion tracker and roto tools. But what has been added is still a pretty big advancement. And like many tools that have been created, users will find ways to use them the creator never intended – which means, many people will adapt the new, seemingly less useful, tools into something very useful, given a chance to play.
Mostly, I just wish people would try and work with the software before blasting it. Most of the people here haven’t even installed it yet, and are already passing judgement. Give it a shot, and then talk about it.

January 19, 2006 at 8:18 pmif this was a .5 update it would be rocking…but sadly I think Adobe is on top of the heap by name alone…and this ain’t the case as new competition creeps up…and if they are still pissed at Apple…I say give it up…that is what competition is all about…they were hanging the carrot in front of Apple for years..now Apple has the upper hand and boo hoo from adobe…I say blow us away adobe with some fabulous 3d in ae….make it the shake or nuke program that it should be…buy Maxon or do something before it is too late….I want Adobe to succeed so start doing it….

…And then raise the price dramatically! Eric, as I know you are a Mac-fanatic, you’re glossing over the price issue. They aren’t even comperable:
After Effects costs $1000 ($199 to upgrade)
Shake costs $3000 ($1000 to upgrade)
Nuke costs $5000 with a $1000 yearly support contract.

If Shake is what you want, Shake is what you need to buy… It would be totally pointless to revamp AE to be Shake.

Huh? You’ve lost me there.Bar3nd
