November 10, 2013 at 10:35 amWhen you import in FCPX it is best to leave all analyzing options un-checked. Analyzing files during import is absolutely unnecessary in your case. This is how your Export Preferences window should look:
You don’t need to optimize your video during import, if the video does not play smoothly on your system you can always transcode your imported clips from within the Event Browser (R-click a clip and select Transcode > Optimized).
Also make absolutely sure that you don’t keep your FCPX Events and Projects on your system drive. This will slow everything down. Just like with FCP7 use a fast secondary or external drive to store your media on.

November 10, 2013 at 6:23 pmThank you so much for the help!
How do I set my Projects and Events folders to my external drive?
Where should I go to change that?

When you create an Event or a Project you first select the drive you want to store them on, then you create them. All available drives show up in the FCPX window.
