    Jeffrey,

I was one of the original Discreet Edit adopters, and yes by Targa DTX card is still functional, though serving as a door stop these days.

I did try Razor once to cut my own demo, and it seemed like a pretty good NLE, however, Edit’s integration with Combustion made it a slam dunk for me.

I think you will find FCP to be a nice change — having software and hardware updates coming from the same manufacturer is a real blessing. Its good to know that Apple software updates are always quick to follow any hardware updates.

Targa cards worked with so many NLEs (or, was it so many NLE’s worked with Targa cards?), but Razor was my favorite.

Thanks for the words of encouragement about FCP!

Last question today: what is the average delivery time buying from Apple.com, assuming I don’t add any components that delay delivery? Should I just haul my lazy butt to a brick and mortar Apple store? I assume the price is set and no one offers any “deals” on Macs. Is this correct?

    Thanks again guys.

[Peter Wiggins] “Don’t forget FCP uses FXplug in the new update :)”

    Peter,

Is FXplug what gave Motion so much realtime performance? Do you know what it will specifically do for FCP? Are you suggesting that video cards such as the ATI Radeon X1900 XT will bring the same benefits to FCP as to Motion? If so that would be very cool.

    Yes

It is all down to GPU from now on 🙂

OK, I will qualify that by saying I’m not a beta tester for FCP, but I have got a beta copy of FXFactory.

You could always check the refurb store on the Apple website.

Thanks for the heads up Peter. I checked out their site and watched their demo video. Its a very important thing to know I think, at any rate I’m glad I know about it.

[Jeffrey F. Krepner] “what is the average delivery time buying from Apple.com”

I got my 23″ display from apple.com next day and I’m in Canada. It cost me an extra $30.00 for the faster service but that’s a steal for overnight fedex for a box that big. I guess they have a great volume rate from fedex. In theory there is less loading and unloading with overnight air as oppossed to ground. This is where all the sliding down ramps and dropping off carts occurs. These are things that loosen the cards in the slot etc. Even my monitor arrived with a 4″ wide hole in the side of the box and I made the driver wait till I opened it and notate this on the invoice. I guess this is a good argument for driving to the brick and mortar location where they set up your system and install the os right there and there is no other handling after that point. You know it’s tip top when you pick it up whereas it could leave the factory tip top but it may not arrive to you that way if there’s a shipping process in between.

I ended up ordering from Mac Mall (I hope that was a good thing) and I paid for overnight air so I can get setup by this weekend for an edit next week. It was a little cheaper than apple.com and I don’t get charged sales tax… but then again, with shipping it all works out in the wash.

    Thanks everyone.

    Jeffrey,

I know MacMall well, one of their two bricks and mortar stores is right down the street from me in Santa Monica. They are very reliable when it comes to major purchases, but don’t bother asking them anything after you make the purchase, their salesmen don’t really have the experience to help with problem solving. You’re much better off asking questions right here on the Cow. My experience is that there are precious few retailers in this world who have even a small fraction of the collective wisdom you’ll be able to get here.
