[Graham Withers] “The display is working fine,”

I suspect it’s not Premiere, but the MBP’s graphics card. It can’t drive 3 displays at once. The 3rd display is connected to the CalDigit, right? What is the 2nd display and how is it connected?

For example, I’m running a 2013 Mac Pro at work with a SanLink 10Gig adapter, BMD UltraStudio Express, and a CalDigit dock all connected as TB2. Monitor 1 is a 27″ Mac display connected to one of the Mac’s TB2 ports via its MiniDisplayPort plug. Monitor 2 is an older 20″ Mac display also connected to the Mac’s TB2 ports. There’s a Promise RAID connected to the CalDigit dock’s TB2 and a large Panasonic display connected via HDMI from the dock.

All 3 displays show up in Premiere with video playback going to the Panasonic via the dock. When I had tried to run all of these from the Mac, I couldn’t get 3 monitors to display, because the HDMI from the Mac robbed the TB2 ports of power. So sometimes it’s a bit tricky getting the right combo to work.

Have you tried HDMI on the 3rd display?

Appreciate the feedback Oliver – I’ve actually got it running now. I think it has something to do with Premiere 13 and the Thunderbolt ports on the MBP…

I tried playback in Premiere 12.1.2 and it worked so I figured it must be a 13.1.2 issue.

When I plugged the RAID into the left/back TB3 port – BUS 0 and the Caldigit with a 2nd monitor via DisplayPort in to BUS 1, the right rear port, and finally the 3rd monitor via HDMI/Mac USB-C adapter in the right front port, it’s working!

    For now…

Good insight on the display robbing the power… All the different configs are awesome but dang, sometimes it’s a real dog’s breakfast making them work!

I believe there’s an issue with Premiere 13.1.2 not recognizing a 3rd monitor properly but only for fullscreen playback.

Whether it has to do with the software version or the 2019 MBP with Radeon Pro Vega 20 4 GB graphics I’m using, I don’t know but earlier versions of Premiere work fine.

Caution to others before ya upgrade.
