Also, in this case, it won’t really work as FCP still needs to be told that the file is progressive. Think of the field dominance column as kind of like the Interpretation dialog in AE.

ProRes is one of the very few codecs that have that field dominance signifier, so it will only work in those codecs. If you notice in the other post that you linked to that I helped someone out, you can actually modify the capture preset to get progressively flagged files before capture.

Well, in my case that will definitely work! FCP reads correct field dominance from source media. That’s what I need.
Anyway it’s obvious that clever editors avoid such situations, but in case you’re in these circumstances, this is the solution. Yet not convenient and correct, but for now – the fastest.
Hope anybody suggest faster and more ‘official’ way.

Mmm, sorry, but if most part of codecs doesn’t have that field dominance signifier, as you say, what’s the use of modifying capture preset? If FD tag isn’t attached to media file, next time you use this clip in a new project field dominance will be treated in ‘default’ way. Am I wrong?
It might only help if you’re going to recapture (not relink) media and you want to force FCP to store footage as progressive.
I thought field dominance tag is common property of all QT files.
By the way, what codecs do have this signifier for sure?

[Max Chernyaev] “If FD tag isn’t attached to media file, next time you use this clip in a new project field dominance will be treated in ‘default’ way. Am I wrong? “

Sorry, I reread my post and it didn’t make sense. ProRes allows the user to modify the preset in the Quicktime Interface before you capture so that once you do capture, then field dominance is tagged properly. This will allow you to not edit every clip in Dumpster after you have captured. See here:

YOu will notice that since ProRes is a newer codec, you can choose your field dominance or not before you capture. You will have to setup a custom preset with this info in your capture card preferences. This also holds true for output from any graphics program such as AE. You can modify the QT interface so that the file holds it’s progressive nature despite the aspect ratio/frame rate.

All FD flags can be edited to all QT movies using DUmpster, what can’t be done all the time is setup a the FD before you capture as some codecs don’t have the interface for it.

[Max Chernyaev] “I thought field dominance tag is common property of all QT files.”

Yes it is and sorry for any confusion. What I meant is that you can actually access the FD signifier from a QT interface.

[Max Chernyaev] “By the way, what codecs do have this signifier for sure?”

I don’t know all of them. I think dv and dv50 do, but they aren’t like ProRes where you can actually set the field dominance.

    Hey there,

Just in response to your above post, you mention ‘Transcode 50i to 25p with Compressor’ – I am trying to transcode a 25p PAL shot footage (captured on to DV tape so obviously 50i now) back into 25p using compressor, but I cannot find or even know the right settings within compressor to do this – can you help??

    Thank you.
    Tris
