Sony Vegas 9 Platinum edition.
Hi everyone. I am new to video editing and have a problem. I have some AVCHD (.M2TS) video files on my computer and I want to edit them in Sony Vegas to make a YouTube video. So I open Sony Vegas 9 (Platinum) and create a new project. I delete all the premade tracks in the timeline and then go to Project, Import Media,and select one of the files. It shows up in the Project Media Window and I drag it down into the timeline. It looks as if its loading up the video and audio tracks but then a message pops up and says “Sony Vegas has stopped working” and there are two options “Close this program” or “Check online for a solution”. Which version of Windows?
Which version of Vegas 9 (b,c,d,e,f, whatever) 32 or 64 bit?
How large an AVCHD file did you try to import?The ‘answers’ seem to be, from what I’ve found, that windows 7 64 bit, with enough RAM (>6 GBs) and enough hard drive for media files stored *on a different drive than your OS* *should* work just fine with AVCHD.However, there have been numerous posts of AVCHD problems lately,it seems. To be clear,AVCHD is a recording codec and while Vegas says it handles editing it just fine, I’m still undecided.
I’ve also encountered this with the most current version of Vegas in the last week, and am trying to narrow down the cause. Is it a bug? An inherent problem with AVCHD files and Vegas? I’m working on converting to AVI to see if I can reproduce the problem with larger intermediate file types. The massive size of the AVI converted files is giving me pause, but probably shouldn’t any more than moving an AVCHD file to PRORES on FCP would. But my Prores files are not as large as the AVI files are. Not yet sure why.
Hopefully a more knowledgeable person on this issue will step up and clarify.

I have windows 7 32 bit and Sony Vegas 9.0b (Build 92). The file is 241Mb in AVCHD (same as .M2TS). My laptop has 4Gb of RAM and Intel Core i5-520M (2.40GHz, Turbo Boost up to 2.93GHz, Dual Core/4T, 3MB/L3). So I think my computers specs are good enough. Thanks for the response.

Did you try without doing this first? It makes no sense to delete the tracks that are already laid out for you ready to be used. Try just adding your media to the existing tracks and see if that works.

Tried that…same thing. I contacted Sony Support and they said there are some issues with my recording device (Hauppauge HD PVR) and Vegas and that their engineers are working on it. Any other editing programs at about this level and price that would work? Thanks -James.

I capture from my Hauppauge HD PVR as .TS files and they edit fine in Vegas Pro 9.0. Try capturing as .TS and see if that helps.
