Anyone good at FFDshow settings?
I’m good with Vegas but i’m not very good with FFDshow and all it’s settings… is there anyone who can explain the basics of what settings to use? Some settings (usually the default settings) actually crash Vegas for me. I’m just using better quality now and it doesn’t crash, but i honestly don’t really know what i’m doing. Codecs are such a mess for me, so if anyone can explain FFDshow settings, or even link to an exported setting that i can use, that would be great!

Actually, let’s get back to the question in your original post:
Is there anything “equal” to FFDshow for compressing videos for Youtubes, to make viewable files for friends ETC?
Yes. Forget about DivX and use the Sony AVC render type with one of the Internet templates that are specifically designed for YouTube. It is always better to use the superior software that you paid for, then to waste your time trying to get free alternatives to work (that you don’t even need). 😉

I really don’t want to argue with anyone here, but answering a question by changing the topic doesn’t seem right.
Either way, even using full HD, using FFDshow i get files that are about 1/4 of the size of a full HD AVC file (using an internet preset for AVC and changing to full HD resolution. That’s reason enough for me to prefer AVC. So it’s simply not true that i don’t to use FFDshow.

Sorry, I should have answered in your original post then. I just wanted you to be aware that you didn’t need DivX to render to AVC. You are right, it didn’t answer your question and I have no need for FDDShow so I don’t know how to configure it or else I would have also answered that question here.
I hope someone who does use it can post an answer for you.

That’s quite alright John, you’ve always been very helpful. I’m a SONY guy myself (i even know how to pronounce it which actually usually causes trouble because people are used to hearing it pronounced wrong, even SONY employees); videowise everything is SONY from the cameras, software, to the Blu-ray player – not the TV but that’s about to change because i’m going to get a Bravia again because my [other brand) LCD is deteriorating after only four years.
About FFDshow, i realised it was as simple as just installing a standalone driver (not a package) and finding a good preset in the FFDshow control panel (i’m using “quality”). Then a preset must also be made for the Vegas export – so it’s less handy than using AVC for sure. But once everything is set up it’s a breeze the next time, as with AVC.
I haven’t blind-tested yet, but i haven’t noticed any quality difference between my AVC videos and my FFDshow videos. Considering that the files i transfer are pretty huge regardless of which format i use, 75% less smaller files is pretty handy. Also, with FFDshow i can put an entire movie as a file on a DVD disc to show a preview version, there wouldn’t be room for an AVCHD file of that length.
I wouldn’t send HD masters as Xvid or DivX to movie directors though. Actually, they frown on AVCHD sometimes too but that’s pretty much because of ignorance. They’re used to MPEG-2 which was used on most early releases. Not to mention that they usually edit in FCP, so they usually never see the actual Blu-ray-authoring process at all.
