Black frames on output & upgrading
I’m working on a project with Vegas 9.0c and am getting black screen on output. This is supposedly an issue with Quicktime and is fixed in 9.0d.
My question is: am I better off turning all my QT files into AVI’s in another program, or upgrading Vegas mid project?
Any opinions?

Dave, upgrade at your own risk.
Doing so mid-project is never a good thing to do but, if you insist on doing so, make sure to create a restore point (if you don’t have everything backed up, that is).The more important question is why the black frames.
Some details such as what kind of footage you’re using and what you’re format trying to render to.
Your OS, CPU speed and amount of RAM are also helpful. -
I read here on the Cow a few days ago that the black frames are a known issue with QT 7.6.2 and Vegas 9.0c. I’m using them in combination with an HP quad core Intel processor with 12 GB RAM and Win 7 Home Premium.

But what kind of footage is on your timeline?
I’m not sure if it’s applicable but here’s a reply from a Sony spokesperson on their forum.
Topic: Jpg, png black in preview and rendering
Reply: This is a known issue that occurs when combining AVCHD and certain still images on the timeline, and we’re working to correct it. We apologize for the inconvenience.
In the meantime, workarounds include:
-Rendering still images to a video format (such as AVI)
-Rendering AVCHD footage to an intermediate format (such as AVI)
-Working in 9.0bIf you need it, previous versions of Vegas are available in the Sony archive.

The problem, which occurs randomly, is when I have an AVI file on the timeline. There is a Boris Effect applied to it. In the Boris effect, there is a PNG still image, a JPG still image and a QT movie. The proper codec’s for the QT movie, which was created in FCP’s Livetype, are installed on the edit system.
Lots of suspects there, right?

Do me a favour and bring only the Boris AVI file into a brand new project and try rendering it.
If it renders OK, then that clip is OK and you’ll have to look elsewhere. -
I started a project with 9d and I am having the same black frame problem. I never had this in 9c. All my clips are either footage shot with my EX3 or Betacam SP ftg transferred via Black Magic Extreme. Again that was never a problem in 9c, only after I switched to 9d.
So Mike should I not go back to 9c until 9d bugs are fixed?

William, if 9.0c worked for you, then go back to it.
I’ve read where a lot of folks have done that because they’re upset with 9.0d for a variety of reasons.
