There is a plugin for lightwave (i forgot the name of it) that allows the usage of huge images in the 3d scene by managing memory better and reading the pixels it needs from disk in order go get around the 32 bit memory ceiling.

I want to load a 15,000 x 15,00 or so pixels image into AE so I can zoom far into it during the course of an animation. Obviously AE has trouble dealing with big images so I was hoping there was a plugin solution to the problem. Does anyone know of any products out there for AE that would let me do this ?

It’s a good idea for a plugin but it has to do more than work with a single image. You may want to write to the folks at GridIronSoftware as they seem the most capable plugin developers when it comes to memory features in AE.

For now, you’ll have to work it out by cutting up your images into more manageable pieces.

Divide your image up in photoshop so that instead of working with one large image, you’re working with a series of smaller images parented to one another to look as if they’re one image. An example of this technique is used in Andrew Kramer’s Earth Zoom tutorial.
