Anyone using the combination of BorisFX 9, Vegas 9 and Win 7? If so, any problems?

I read on the Boris forum that BorisFX doesn’t work as a 64 bit plug-in, only 32. Since I got my Win 7 machine, I’ve been using the 64 bit version of Vegas. I assume that means I’ll have to install Vegas 9 32 bit on my system.

Will the project files from the 32 bit version of Vegas work okay in the 64 bit version? Is it a reasonable work flow to keep switching from Vegas 32 to Vegas 64 depending on whether or not I’m using Boris?

The reason I want to use Boris is that I’ve been using it since version 2 and I’m pretty adept at it. I find it much easier to use BorisFX than to fight with Vegas and it’s backwards keyframing system.

    Thanks in advance . . . .

I’m using Boris RED, the big brother of FX with Windows 7 64-bit and Vegas Pro 9.0c 32-bit.

I read on the Boris forum that BorisFX doesn’t work as a 64 bit plug-in, only 32.

Yup, Boris is a little behind the times. I guess they couldn’t see that 64-bit train comin’. 😉

I assume that means I’ll have to install Vegas 9 32 bit on my system.

    Yes.

Will the project files from the 32 bit version of Vegas work okay in the 64 bit version?

Yes, but not if you add Boris to them.

Is it a reasonable work flow to keep switching from Vegas 32 to Vegas 64 depending on whether or not I’m using Boris?

It’s the only workflow until more vendors smell the 64-bit roses. the only caveat is that you can’t open a project in the 64-bit version once you have 32-bit plug-ins in it. I mean you can open it, but the plug-ins will be missing.

I find it much easier to use BorisFX than to fight with Vegas and it’s backwards keyframing system.

Me too. This is the one thing I wish Vegas had and that’s the ability to save several keyframes as a preset.

Thanks John. So I guess the only realistic workflow is to “downgrade” to 32 bit Vegas 9 after buying a new PC and new software, or get another effects program that offers 64 bit plugins? (You listening Boris?)

Well… unless they want to stop selling software, when Adobe comes out with CS5 next month which is ONLY available as 64-bit… they had better be listening. My hunch is that Boris has got to be working on 64-bit versions of all of their plug-ins. It is sad that they didn’t want to be a leader with Sony and support Vegas Pro but I’m sure they can’t ignore Adobe CS5 because they make After Effects plug-ins. Let’s only hope that this means 64-bit for Vegas as well.

BCC 7 will offer 64 bit support as well as the next generation of the Red products (Red, FX, Graffiti).

AS for now Vegas will require you to run in 32 bit in order to use Boris products.

    Thanks Matthew,
Guess there’s no point in upgrading until the next release comes out – will it be at NAB?

Unfortunately Boris FX will not have a booth at NAB this year.

There is no ETA for a release.

I’m using Boris FX, Vegas 9, and Win 7 too. And yeah, if you use FX in plug-in mode, it’s only found in 32-bit Vegas. Of course, you can have both 32-bit and 64-bit installed on a 64-bit system, and still run 64-bit when you don’t need the plug-in.

You kind of have to cut the other guys a little bit of a break… Vegas was way ahead of the pack in developing a full 64-bit NLE (and even in developing one that works… I had a few issues with Vegas 8.1). You can probably count on the upgrades coming, and costing money. So I’m holding off any upgrades until 64-bit versions are out.

    Dave,
My problem was not following directions – I didn’t have QT installed on the new edit system.

Any problems working with a JPG in Boris 9? If I try to import a JPG into a project, it just shows up black in the Composite window. The video tracks from Vegas and PNG files all show up fine in the BorisFX window.

    Thanks
