Help re workflow – thanks
Hi Guys I think there is some sort of problem in my workflow as my finished masters whether it be DVD or video for my website, dont look technically as good as they should. What starts out to be brilliant pics turn out a bit “fluffy” So I am sorry, but the nature of this post means that it has to be a long one. Here is my current workflow for standard def in vegas pro 8c and Architect 5. (I have no probs with HD masters)
JVC cam HD 111 – Even though the client has ordered SD, I always record in High Def at 720 p 25fps
I capture in HD in Vegas and the properties of the timeline are set to 720 p 25fps
After the edit I render in HD using the 720 p 25fps template.
When I open Architect I set the properties to Standard def for PAL DV Widescreen. The results seem OK However my dilema starts when I take the DVD and play it on a CRT tele. We see some flickering especially around “knife edge” areas such as palm leaves etc.
I turn De interlace flicker ON before rendering. Overall the results are OK and we havent had a complaint however the result is certainly not close to Broadcast. I do not have an LCD, TFT or LED dedicated monitor in the studio so I am editing on High Def PC screens. I have seen my results on a large LCD and results were good, HD was incredible! (luv the JVC’s)
I understand the diff between Progresive scan and Interlacing…is this where my problem lies?
Should I shoot in SD or HD only as requested? (using HD for record means your client can upgrade) Should I use an SD timeline to edit my HD footage on?
Taking into account the difference in resolution between HD and SD, why are my pics perhaps not as sharp as they should be?RE the web video……This seems to be a minefield however I am rendering the timeline to an AVi file and then converting it to Flash 8 using a Flash conversion tool called Moyea. The results are not as good as they should be. Has anyone got a better workflow suggestion for my web vid? I have tried codecs H263 H264 with no better succes. My site does not “suport HD”. It allows flash and a couple of other file ext’s.

Flickering is usually an interlacing problem. How does it look on an interlaced device like a TV? If you are rendering interlaced you should view it on an interlaced device. If you are rendering for LCD then you should render progressive. If it is flickering on a TV then the try adding a slight Gaussian Blur (Vertical only 0.001 or 0.002) to those clips and see if it helps. The idea is to blur them so that they occupy more than one scan line.

Your problem is that PAL widescreen 1049×576 in square pixels. When you scale HD 1280×720 to 1049×576 there are fractional pixels in the conversion and because the smallest unit is a pixel, the fractional pixels must be blended to form real pixels and this blending soften’s the picture and/or creates stair-steps. For PAL I would shoot SD or HD as needed but not try and convert 720 HD to SD.

I render using the Sony AVC encoder but if you can only use Flash then render your AVI using a lossless codec like Huffyuv or Lagarith to maintain the highest quality possible to feed to Flash.

I suspected it was in the conversion. I will do a few tests with standard def and see how we look on an interlaced TV as opposed to LCD progressive.

I see that we have yuv templates in vegas – are these the same as to which you refer to as Huffyuv? Haven’t come across Lagarith….I’ll google it.
The workflow for web movie files is currently Thus….Render the timeline to AVI using the yuv codec, then Moyea converts it to flash 8. Unfortunately Moyea doesn’t recognise the M2t file so thats why I render as AVI. As well as Flash 8, Moyea also gives me H263, H264 and FV4 outputs that all create an SWF flash file
Is it possible to load other codecs or templates into vegas? Or will converting to Flash always be a third party affair?Thanks again
