Video size question
Hello, I have 2 quick questions, the first one takes me ages to search through the internet and still unable to find answer. I’m using 9.0c version.
1. Vegas unable to recognize the audio bar, only video on Avi file. Using Gspot it says the audio is 0x2000 (Dolby AC3) AC3 and another file is 0x0055 MPEG-1 Layer 3. Is there any audio codec that I can download without converting the video files?
2. I got a wmv file. Length 58 minutes, Res 640×480, audio 64kbps for only 371MB. I tried to add some scrolling text and split the file in half. The first try is already take around 380MB alone. My question is, how do I retain the exactly format and size of the file with only text added? Is there any setting that I wasn’t aware of.

Vegas is a little particular about importing AC3. It will do it for certain formats but probably does not expect AC3 in an AVI container which is why it won’t import. You will need to convert the audio to a WAV file with another tool (maybe Avidemux) in order to use it in Vegas.

Adding anything to a video will cause the video to be re-rendered. Whenever you render you loose some quality unless you are using a lossless codec (which WMV is not). If you want to the file to be smaller, you need to reduce the bitrate of your render. There is no way to avoid loosing quality in this process.
Some formats can be “smart rendered” by Vegas, meaning any part of the file that is unchanged will be copied from the target to the source as long as the render template matches the source format. Unfortunately, WMV is not one of the formats that Vegas can smart render.

Thank you so much for helping me out, but could you elaborate a bit more, what do you mean by convert to wave? Convert video to separate wav file? I’m confused. I spent 30 mins searching google, one of them ended up to this thread, but I still have no clue. I did download avidemux but didn’t know how to use it.
More help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Use File | Open to load your AVI file. On the left, for Video select Copy for Audio select PCM for Format select AVI and then save the file. It should just copy the video and convert the audio to PCM wave.
