Vegas or Adobe (and some annoyances)
Hi all,
I am trying to make a decision about which product to use. Sony Vegas 9 or Adobe Premiere CS4. I like Adobes ease of editing things in the trimmer but I really like the Sony Media Manager (I don’t need to keep files organised on PC, just tag them properly)
I find working with clips in Sony’s trimmer window, a bit difficult and clumsy. The playback speed is hard to control and if im dragging the cursor using the mouse then i need to knock the sensitivity right down. Where as Adobe has multiple options for fine frame navigation (scroll up / down for example) It has in and out setting buttons but Sony only has an add from cursor button 🙁
I get annoyed by sony vegas playing the timeline sequence infinitely until i press stop.
I often find that I have selected a portion of the timeline (yellow brackets) but then I cant unselect it ? I need to select a different portion ?Id like to continue using sony but if not, can anyone advise me I I can use Sony’s media manager external to Vegas ? Like as a standalone or is there alread a standalone media manager available ?

You cannot use the Sony Media Manager standalone and if you love 4-point editing than you are better off with Premiere. Personally, I hate it but I didn’t grow up in the linear video tape world. While you can get close with the Vegas trimmer, most of the editors I know who use Vegas don’t even use the trimmer. (up until Vegas 9 it as hidden by default!) We just drop the media on the timeline, edit out the parts we don’t want and close up the gaps. This is Vegas’ editing style. You either love it or hate it. (it sounds like you hate it)

Thanks for your reply, I didnt think of editing that way. I might try that and see if I am able to get into that way of working.

Yellow brackets – I am not in front of my editing PC right now, but there is a selection in the config menu to delete selections when no active video is selected. Or something like that…
Also, the default timeline display is start frame, mid frame and end frame of the event on the timeline. (If it’s on the timeline, it’s an event. If it’s in the trimmer, it’s a clip. Semantics, I know, but the difference is important when corresponding with the manual or other users). You can also change this in the conig menu.
I have also never used the trimmer. I think it’s there just to handicap film, FCP or Premiere users who just can’t accept the ease of simply editing on the timeline.
Scroll speed – Contour Shuttle Pro. Can’t edit without it.
