Maybe a basic question, but when I want to render an avi file as a DivX file (or a new avi) file, the resulting file shows smaller with black boxes at the top, bottom, left and right. I check a DivX file on TV and also there, it is not full-screen. What am I doing wrong. I used to be a Pinnacle Studio user, where you could just import a DV-avi file, cut and trim and export to avi again. This easy operation is something I don’t seem to manage in Vegas.

You will want to ensure that your settings are correct- especially as they relate to resizing and your PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio). You can do this from the custom area of the render dialog box.

Now, having said that, if you can render to DivX, that means you have the DivX encoder. I would strongly recommend you use the DivX encoder for rendering to DivX. You will have more controls relating to your DivX output than you will in Vegas as it is specific to DivX.

I guess that is too difficult for me at this stage. Why should the PAR be changed in order to render to DivX? What exactly do you mean by “using the DivX encoder rather than Vegas”?

You don’t have to change the PAR, you just want to make sure it matches up with your project settings (I was just making sure you did not inadverdently change it).

Here is what I mean by the DivX encoder. You have to have it to encode to DivX.

To render avi to avi, I start from a DV-avi file (widescreen). Then in Vegas: render as > video for windows (*.avi)> custom > Pal DV widescreen. PAR here is fixed to 1 (cannot be changed). Nevertheless, in the Vegas preview during rendering I get a smaller screen with black boxes all around. I guess it should be possible to just convert avi to avi (if I want to obtain 1 avi file after cut, trim,…)?

When choosing: render as > video for windows (*.avi)> custom > DivX codec I get the same effect, except when I do change the PAR to 1.4568. Also I see a configure button next to the codec. Here I can change the quality, but whichever I choose, file size remains the same. That’s not clear to me either.

Looking at the link you sent, I tried to convert an avi file to Divx with the conversion tool (trial version), but then 16:9 is converted to 4:3 and I don’t see any settings w.r.t. this in the tool. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi Dirk,

https://labs.divx.com/DrDivX is actually what I should have linked you. It gives you all the controls you need to adjust your file output in DivX.

Let me know if you get stuck with it.
