Well, alrighty then. This is strange. I have a 1280×1024 25fps mpeg4 .mov that when I import into Vegas, looks completely normal in both the Trimmer and the video Preview. When I drop it into the timeline (in a project that is 1280×720) in the preview box it goes fuzzy like I’ve dropped gaussian blur all over it. What in the world did I do wrong?

Any sort of resize is going to result in a loss of some quality, however, it shouldn’t go Gaussian crazy on you. To troubleshoot, toggle the Preview Window to Best (Full) and see what happens. It might be that the lower-quality preview is what looks bad and not the actual output from Vegas (a render might also look fine, even with the preview window fuzzy). The other thing to check is the size of the preview window. Certain sizes will make the window very fuzzy and other sizes will look great. You can double click the title bar to expand the window to make the window project-sized.

Thank you for your help. Yes, I made sure before I posted that my .mov was sized to its actual size in the timeline and not the project’s dimensions, then I made sure the dimensions of the project matched the .movs (as much as possible), and I also was careful to keep my preview window set to Best quality. What I didn’t do, however was to make sure the project preview was set to Best(Full) as in screen. That fixed it. Thank you!
