only audio appears no video with avi files
please help, everytime i import an avi file into sony vegas 8 pro, only the audio shows up. i used to think it was a corupted file, now i realize i probably need a codec. which is really confusing because i thought the one i installed months ago was enough. do you have any idea what kind of codec can fix this problem?

Only the codec that the file requires can fix the problem. Download a copy of GSpot and drop the AVI file into it and it will tell you which codec it needs. Then find that codec and install it.

I used Gspot and it says the codecs are installed. Now i really don’t know what’s the problem. could it be a problem with vegas, it still only shows audio when i import the videos.

What codec is it? Have you edited these files before in Vegas 8? Are you using Vegas Pro 8.1 64-bit by any chance? The more information you can tell us, the more chance someone might be able to help.

I forgot to mention that while most AVI files only show audio, some play without a problem. I know the videos arn’t corrupted because i can watch them on my computer(Power DVD). The codecs are MP43 (S-Mpeg 4 version 3) and 0x0055 MPEG-1 Layer 3 (audio). I have sony vegas 8 pro, version 8.0a. and to answer your question, i’ve never edited these videos in vegas before.

Pro 8 went up to version 8.0c so I recommend doing the update first and see if that fixes you problems.
Please be sure to read the Release notes as, in addition to numerous bug fixes, there were several changes made to the way Vegas does things that will mess you up if you’re not aware of them.

If these came from a camera that you own. See if the camera came with software and if it did, install it. This may have the codec that you need. Otherwise, I would download the x264vfw codec and see if that helps. Make sure Vegas is not running when you install the new codec.
