Vegas 8.1 red screen on timeline
I have a new core i7 920 w/9 Gig ram running Vegas 8.1 64-bit on Vista 64-bit OS. No firewall or online access. Whether I am editing mpg footage or AVCHD mts files, I get a red screen on the video track of the timeline, and a black picture. Audio plays fine. Sometimes I can open an mpg file, sometimes it says there is an error with the file. I change settings to various things, but no luck. Previous projects have worked okay. Any ideas?

You got a brand new computer… why not the brand new Vegas? I would download the trial copy of Vegas Pro 9.0 and see if it fixes the problem. If it does, buy it. Vegas Pro 8.1 is older than the latest Vegas Pro 8.0 so you might also want to try 8.0 and see if that fixes it.

Great idea, John. V8.0c didn’t cut it. But V9.0c loaded the project on the timeline without the red frames. Looks like it is rendering it with no problem. Big difference in performance and handling with my AVCHD files. Really appreciate your help.

I had exactly the same thing with Vegas 7 – red sections on the timeline. I discovered that the problem was related to the cheap tapes I was using, causing dropouts – I ditched the cheap tapes and bought the high quality Sony tapes (my cam was a HVR-HC1E at the time) and it solved the problem. -
I’m glad it helped. In general, if you are going to work with the latest formats like AVCHD, you need to keep your software up to date to ensure that you are getting the latest improvements. Enjoy that new beast of a PC. 😉

After loading Sony V9, I rendered a three-hour ten minute AVCHD storyboard in less than 3 hours. Thanks all for your input and assistance.
