Masking… underlying layer disappears???
I am trying to mask something onto a video. If you must know, I’m adding lightsabers into a sword fight in a movie.
When I preview the scene, it looks as it’s supposed to with the lightsabers on top of the original video. However, when I render, the original video is replace with simply a black screen. I don’t know what might be causing this, but I’m guessing I have something checked that I shouldn’t. Any suggestions?

What is your output codec? Something must be going on there. Try rendering a few frames to QuickTime using the Animation codec, just to check. Also, change the Preview window to Best (Full) – there are often changes between the a “Preview” render and a “Best” render, sometimes subtle, sometimes profound.
p.s., I’ll admit I’ve done light sabers over a scene in “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” – fun stuff, but unbelievably tedious. Still, I guess I could have been watching TV instead, so time well spent!

Aha! The “Good” and “Best” preview are different. They appear as the final video does. Now this is interesting. I make the video track solo, and it shows up as pitch black. A problem with the original media itself?
I don’t know much about codecs, but I can try rendering it in Movie Maker before use in Vegas. That has helped solve other issues for me, like importing a video with no video, only audio.
