    TSR?

I did try shutting down as many processes as possible.

Tried re-installing, checking codecs and everything, now getting a different error. I wondered if it might be permissions, so I tried to make all the files involved (vegas, temp files, work files, video, audio etc) read/write for me as a user, but it says “access denied”. I guess I need to run explorer as admin? How do I do that, as I’m logged in as an admin anyway?

I just remembered – I tried exporting as wmv. This one particular codec doesn’t crash, but it doesn’t go anywhere.

I cancelled after it had climbed to an estimated 12 hours to render 1 minute of plain movie with one transition! (would be 20 seconds max before)

    Done some more research:

    I’ve: run memtest (it passes).
Run sfc and all system files have integrity.
I’ve scanned all the drives, all pass.
I’ve checked permissions on all the files.
    I’ve removed and re-installed codecs.
    I’ve re-installed Vegas.
I’ve tried it in a new user profile.
I’ve even gone as far as to install a separate 32 bit copy of windows and Vegas (with updates).
Still, it crashes with the same error in this brand new copy of windows!

I do recall seeing a message like “undo buffer has crashed, please save to new project and restart” which I did. But I could still carry on building the project OK. I can play the project right through on the timeline without problems.

My system has all the correct and latest drivers for sound, video, motherboard etc. I disabled every single other running application.
I also tried it with and without readyboost and/or swap file enabled.
I have 4Gb of RAM, this is the first time this has happened.

I really don’t want to start the project again. It’s not huge, but I’ve got everything in the right media bins now.

I have also tried saving as a new copy, completely wiping the timeline, and putting one bit of video, on it’s own, on the timeline. It still crashes.

So finally, I try an experiment – I open a second copy of Vegas, select all on the timeline, copy, and paste into this new project. Renders perfectly, not a single problem!

I only have 30 files spread across 4 media bins, all in the same format, all from the same source. I’m not going to remove them one by one, quicker just to start again.

But what this shows is that there is a problem with the Vegas project file. Which is why I attached it to my ticket to Sony! I was hoping they could diagnose the error in the project file, but instead, of course, they blame the system.

Well, the problem is solved, I hope this helps others!
