HDV to SD Disc! Please Help!
I am using Z1U’s and capturing in HDV. I have been providing clients with Blu Ray and rendering using the Blu Ray Template. Amazing! But then they need SD copies and I have not found a great template for this. What should I be selecting in the custom settings to get the best clarity on SD? Two Pass Bit Rate? Min? Max?

I use the standard DVD Widescreen template with my Z1U footage and it looks fine. Remember, HDV is 5x more resolution than SD! It’s not going to look anywhere near as good in SD but it should still look better than footage shot in SD. You can certainly use the 2-pass option to make sure you are getting the best picture for the bitrate. If you have enough room on the disc you could also use a constant bitrate of 8Mbps. I wouldn’t go any higher than that.

Hi John,
Thanks for your help. SO here’s a follow-up question. If I were to create a project for Blu Ray adjusting the file properties to the blu ray settings and then need to also prepare that same veg file for SD. Do I have to resave with different file properties or can I use a template to render the footage using the same file properties for the project? Hopefully you can interpret what I am asking.

There is no reason to alter the project at all. This is how you would target multiple formats. Just render with any template you want and Vegas will do the converting for you.
