    Hi! I’m wondering something. I’ve tried many different settings in Vegas Pro 9 for rendering BluRay files in AVCHD, and eventually i found that one of the templates included with the programs worked best – apart from that i just had to change the audio to 5.1 instead of stereo. This “default” AVCHD template has “Upper field first”. It looks great in my BluRay player, but when the picture moves to the left or right, on the PC, ONLY on the pc, do i get the effect where it looks like “two different lines that aren’t in sync”. I’m sure you know what i mean. So, is it normal when authoring BluRay discs to use upper field first? When i’ve exported for YouTube or just AVI’s with people’s birthday parties and stuff like that, i’ve always used progresive scan – but that does not seem to be the right choice for BluRay. Am i correct? Should i continue using “upper field first” when making BluRay discs?

    Yes, you should continue to use upper field first. Blu-ray is meant to be played in a Blu-ray player, not a PC. If you play the disc on your PC with Blu-ray player “software”, it should look fine because the software is smart enough to deinterlace the footage for you. If you play the footage raw with some media player it will look terrible because the media player isn’t smart enough to deinterlace it.

    Yes, my media player are a bit obtuse and make it look terrible, and it does look right in a BluRay-compatible program.

    Sidenote though… shouldn’t common viewer programs; any media viewer, in the near future be made to understand BluRay-files? I’m sure there will be a lot of those files around.

    Actually… no. Media players assume that they are playing web media which is progressive. Sure they could be made smarter, but this has nothing to do with Blu-ray. Analog video has been interlaced long before computers and media players were invented so you’d think they would have learned by now. 🙁

    Your best bet is to render AVC based on the video you shot. Blu-Ray can support 1920×1080, 1440×1080, or 1280×720 sized images, and it can handle 1080/60i, 1080/24p, 720/60p, 720/24p… and the PAL-based version of these, too (eg, 50i, 50p).

    So if you’re shooting in normal NTSC HDV mode, your best render is 1440×1080/60i.. Blu-Ray players and the devices that display their output can deal with interlaced video. These days, it’s probably upconverted to progressive video, simply because most digital TVs can’t actually display an interlaced video. But they do this clean.

    A basic video player for a PC isn’t doing any of that special de-interlacing magic to make your HD video good on the computer screen. Some more sophisticated ones will.. try Nero Showtime, or the free Splash Lite, and you may see better-looking video on your PC as well as your TV.

    If you have the sort of camcorder than can shoot in progressive mode, you can certainly render that for Blu-Ray and PC, without any of the interlacing issues. But it’s unwise to do frame rate conversions… it takes huges bits of CPU power to do right, and still looks iffy. Best to render in the resolution you shot in, where possible.
