I know this not an editing question… however a client hired me to transfer footage from his minidv tapes onto dvds. The thing is he filmed using lp mode and not sp. Will playing the tapes in lp mode ruin my camera tape drive???

If your camera tape drive has an option for LP mode, there will be no problem. (Except ofcourse that the quality of the final result might be less than when it was shot in the SP mode…)

SP vs. LP is not the same as it was in the VHS days.
It’s digital so the data on the tape in LP mode is the same quality as if it it was recorded in SP mode.
The only potential problem is that chances of getting dropouts increase.

..I remember some problems capturing LP tapes in the past… most noticeable audio “glitches” and, as Mike says, dropouts (on some tapes)…. my problems was solved playing these tapes on the same camcorder that was used for the recordings …

    good luck
