Importing DVDs captured from a Sony Hi8 Camera

I need some help on importing and editing Hi8 video please
I copied a video captured with a sony hi8 camera onto a DVD. When I playback the dvd on a 4:3 tv the screen looks fine. The problem arrises when i try to view the dvd on my pc or try to import it in Sony Vegas for editing.
On the bottom of the screen a continous line pops up which looks like a distortion.
Anyone has idea why this happens and how I can get rid of it?
To copy the hi8 video onto dvd I used a Toshiba dVD recorder and not direct capture to pc.

How did you get the video from the Hi8 tape to the DVD?
It sounds like the tracking is off. You probably can’t see it on the TV because of overscan. -

I connected the sony handycam to a Toshiba DVD recorder and copied the tape. Then i inserted the DVD in my pc and through sony vetgas pro i imported the media.

If you are trying to preserve your Hi8 tapes this is a terrible way to do it. You are taking video that is compressed at about 5:1 with a 25Mbps bitrate and capturing it with a DVD recorder that compresses it at about 25:1 with only 9Mbps bitrate (that’s 5x more compress and less than half the bitrate which means loss of quality).
If your camera doesn’t have firewire outputs, I would get an Analog-to-Digital DV capture device like the Canopus ADVC-110 or ADS Tech A/V Link and capture to DV quality. Then edit and archive as DV and finally burn to DVD for viewing.

I also tried what you are suggesting some time ago. The result was just the same. I still got a line of distortion at the bottom of the screen!
I cannot really describe what I mean by distortion but if anyone can help me I am willing to send you some video files.

The line of distortion is the sync signal that is never seen on a real TV because of overscan. This is perfectly normal in analog video and there is no way to avoid it. If it bothers you, or if you are making web video where the whole frame will be seen, you can mask it with a thin black bar overlay when you render.
