  • Timeline events read wrong files

I have file in Vegas Pro 8 I have worked about 10 times with no problems. But now when I open it most of the video events on the Timeline no longer read from the video file they are supposed to reference. Instead, they read one of the MP3 files which contain a sound effect. (I found this out by right-clicking the events to highlight the media in the media bin.) So no video plays, but that particular piece of sound plays over and over. The video thumbnails are now blank, though they are still in place.

There is nothing wrong with the original video file on the hard drive and it has not been moved. There are a few events on my Timeline that reference a different video file, and these events play fine and their thumbnails show their scenes just as they should.

The sound effect which is being read erroneously so often by my video events also appears at another spot on the Timeline, where I had placed it intentionally. This event thumbnail is now tinted pink, and one of the video events that occurs several minutes later also has a pink-tinted thumbnail. I have no idea what this video event was as its thumbnail is now blank.

I am pretty new to Vegas, so I hope someone out there can help. Is there away to get these events on the timeline to start reading the proper video file?

I have never heard of this problem, but could there be a virus involved?

So when you highlight the event on the time line and right click and choose find event in in project media it goes back to an incorrect file in the media project window? Don’t know why it would have happened except that ‘its a computer’. But – is the correct file in the project media list? Can you drop the correct file on the file in question on the time line by right click dragging and choosing ‘add as take’ and get it corrected?

    Theo –
I can’t rule a virus out, but I doubt it. I use this computer almost exclusively for Vegas Pro. I haven’t opened up the internet in months.

    Terry –
At first, the correct file was not showing in the Project Media, so I added it. That didn’t make a difference. I have been able to successfully place new segments of this file on Timeline, but the other ones still read from that WAV file. I tried your idea using the “add as take” command. It places a segment of the correct length on the Timeline, but it starts at the beginning of the file rather than seeking out the correct segment. So every scene I tried this on showed mostly the leader at the beginning of my 18-minute film transfer. But thanks for the suggestion anyway.

    Steve,

Do you have a backup from your veg-file from an earlier timepoint where Vegas was still functioning normal?

What happens if you move your footage to a new folder. Upon opening the veg-file, Vegas will ask you where to find the source material. Will it open then correctly?

I rooted around and found an older version of the file tucked away in my computer. I’ve done a lot of work since then, but this is better than nothing. In case anyone’s curious, the backup file of the current version is just as messed-up as the original.

I’ll try your suggestion of moving the footage to a new folder and see what happens when I re-open the file. It just might work.

    Hello,

Did you ever have any luck rectifying this problem? Im currently experiencing the same thing where media in the timeline gets unwantingly replaced with other files and some media just turns into a blank red instance. Very, very frustating, resulting in almost fresh starts everytime.

    Regards,

    Lincoln
