  Compression and workflow question

  I’ve got VASST/DSE’s “Now Hear This” DVD, but I had to get started editing, and I have not had time to get to it yet.

  I am filming religious/educational video. The first thing I do is to get a good clean take that I am happy with (mostly continuous). Then I pan/crop the whole project, and apply Noise Reduction and compression to the whole thing (before I start cutting). Then I listen through it once or twice, and bring down any peaks that go over the 0 db manually, by inserting a volume envelope and manually dragging down the volume of any word that goes over -0.4 db.

  The process works, but it takes a long time, and I think it is probably pretty crude. I am wondering if there is a quicker way to get an acceptable audio level that will not take as much time. I think part of the problem is that I applied 3:1 compression this time, instead of 2:1 compression. Should I just stick with 2:1 compression this time? Or is there some setting I can use to limit the peaks, so that there are fewer of them to deal with, in between now and the time I can get to Spot’s DVD?
