Surround project putting center channel audio through left-front speaker…
Yeah, I really can’t explain what’s going on here. I just recently got my 5.1 working again on my computer (had to reinstall Windows and couldn’t remember how I’d done it last time), but now in Vegas 8.1 in a surround project it just wants to put the center channel audio through the left front speaker and not the center speaker. If I put a single, mono track on the timeline, change the project settings to 5.1 surround, and turn off all the other speakers (in the audio track) except the center channel and play it…it’ll play through the left-front speaker. If I turn off all except the left front channel…it plays through the left front. Using Windows’ sound configuration where it plays a little *ding* sound through each speaker as it lights up on the screen works just fine. I’d like it if the center and bass were seperated a little more, but whatever. Honestly, it’s not a HUGE issue, it’s just really REALLY annoying and confusing when I’m trying to work things out, not being able to listen to how it’s gonna actually sound, and I don’t have the patience to actually render out and see if it renders properly, with the center channel on the center channel how it should be, but I’ll probably end up trying that.
Oh, and before someone asks, I don’t havemy plugs swapped, as I said, using Windows’ sound config tool that plays the ding sound works just fine, left-front plays through that speaker and center plays through center, just like normal. It’s JUST vegas doing this. I even tried a video I rendered with 5.1 audio before reinstalling and it works, center channel is just on the center channel, like it should be.

I was having this same issue and discovered this solution:
In Sony Vegas, go to Options–>Preferences/Audio Device tab. Vegas probably has you set to Microsoft Sound Mapper (or maybe even Windows Classic Wave Driver). These settings are what’s causing your audio to be directed to the left channel. Change this setting to Direct Sound Surround Mapper; all your audio will now be going to the correct channels.
