  • Changing a movie into widescreen

    Hello,

I am making a movie that will eventually play on the computer desktop. The computer resolution is 1024 x 768, so I am making it that size in square pixels. There is a possibility that the computers will change and have a resolution of 1280 x 800 Wide screen… How would I go about resizing this? The video is a mix of footage and graphics.

    Thanks!
    Dasha.

Personally, I’d try to persuade you to work at 720P (1280 x 720) that way you’ll be ready for any application – letterbox or center cut on the 1024 x 768, full screen on the 1200 x 800, and HD distribution in one swipe. Just be sure to guard your edges with enough safe zone if you plan on doing the center cut.

If you design it big, you can always make it smaller. It’s much harder to go the other way. If there’s any possibility of it being shown on the widescreen format – design within those dimensions to save yourself a headache in the future.

You should definitely design wide, and just don’t put anything too important along the left and right edges. Have some moving interest back there, but nothing critical. That way if the final destination is 4:3, you can crop it out and not lose anything.
You see this in HD programming for broadcast all the time. The same setup has to work for the HD and SD version of the broadcast.

All good solutions but don’t forget stuff like RedGiant’s Instant HD that can convert 4:3 to 16:9 with minimal loss of quality. It’s something to think about with legacy footage/projects.

Perfect. Thanks for the advise. Need to find out from clients if letterbox is ok, otherwise will go the plugin route.
