    what i would like to do take segment oa video of my son running with the football and blackout evrything but him and put him on still background as i do the introductions. not sure where to begin or how.

    You are describing the Rotoscope process, which Vegas doesn’t do. You might be able to do it in AfterEffects, or if you have Photoshop try exporting the scene in a sequence of stills, use Photoshop to remove the background of each image, then re-import back to Vegas.

    Vegas can do frame-by-frame roto masking with the bezier masking tool just fine (Event Pan/Crop > Mask), but yes, After Effects’ tools are better. Still, if it was just one frame, I’d just do it in Vegas – save time and a few hundred dollars. That said, even though AE’s masking tools are better, there are NO magical mask buttons that will do what you want for free: it’s probably going to be a tedious, frame-by-frame-by-frame roto job for hours no matter what. Honestly, that’s the unglamorous side to what effects guys and gals do all the time, however.
