Dealing with (directors) who don’t know Vegas
Hi there. I started editing because a friend had a project she needed edited and I am fairly technical (in a generic software/computer sense) so I said I’d give it a whack.
After experimenting somewhat unsuccessfully with a variety of free Linux-based solutions, I ended up deciding to spend a few bucks and get Sony Vegas Studio Platinum (because I already have PC hardware).
The long and short of it can be boiled down to two things:
1)I love editing
2) I’m not too bad at it.The first two films I have “cut” have both been accepted into the Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival. The very first one actually got a premiere at a SXSW showcase. I’m told that’s good for a beginner.
Anyway, I will talk to a director, and sooner or later they get around to software and when I say “Sony Vegas” they shut down. If it’s not FCP or Avid, they think that it’s no good.
Since this is a Vegas forum, I’m guessing maybe someone out there has found a good way to get over the “I’ve never heard of Vegas” syndrome?
I love the software, I want to keep using it, and I sure as heck don’t want to buy an expensive Mac and expensive software when I get great results (and no crashes) with what I have…
Maybe there is a list somewhere of award-winning films cut with Vegas?
Or some industry GIANT who says it’s great?
I don’t have enough “throw-weight” at this point to convince directors that I’m not just too ignorant to realize that nothing will do for their film but FCP or Avid, but that only leaves me with low-pay gigs with desperate directors who are amazed and pleased when their films look great.
Suggestions?
