motion blur on dvd after rendering…
– I have footage that was shot on a Sony xdcam at 24p.
– I’ve used the xdcam clip browser to transport everything into Vegas Pro 8.0c.
– I’ve edited a nice little 5 minute short together with Vegas.
– The whole project was edited with a format of 1440x1080x128, 24p.
– I’ve been told to render at the highest quality possible so the finished product is as high quality as possible, even though it’s ending up on a dvd. So I rendered out of vegas with the Main Concept MP4 at 1440×1080, 24p, Pixel Aspect Ratio of 1.33 with a Constant Bit Rate of 10 Million.
– The only settings I’ve never really been certain of are…
– Profile, which is set to Main. Is that right?
– Field Order, which is set to None (progressice scan)
– Number of Reference Frames, which is set to 2. It also has Use Deblocking Filter checked.When I get into DVD Architect 5.0, I again burn at the highest quality it will let me. I up the BitRate to 9.8 instead of 8.0. That helped on another project. I also adjust the frame rate to 23.976.
Are all of these settings correct?
On Final Cut I know they have a program called “Compressor.” A Final Cut guy said that’s how that program fixes the Motion Blur Problem that I’m having.
Does Vegas have something like “Compressor”?
I refuse to believe that my Vegas can’t do everything that Final Cut can. If it can’t, then oh well. If it can, what is my solution?

You should not be rendering to MPEG4. This is actually loosing quality because of double rendering. You should render to MPEG2 directly from Vegas using the DVD Architect 24p NTSC Widescreen video stream template and then render your audio separately using Dolby Digital AC3. This will give you the highest quality and probably avoid the motion blur you are seeing which I assume is being introduced during the double render you were doing.

Perhaps you didn’t ask the right question. If your target is DVD, then you can only place MPEG2 onto a DVD and therefore the best format to render to right out of Vegas is MPEG2 for DVD.

That depends on your target. For DVD, MPEG2 is the correct format. For the web, MPEG4 is a better format. You need to render in the best format for your delivery target. There is no “one” correct answer.
