Does it matter what program you use to import footage?
I have the Panasonic PV-GS320 and i have the new macbook aluminum. Before I use to use Adobe Premiere Elements to import it on my PC but then i got my new firewire 800 cable for my mac and i imported the footage using iMovie and the quality wasnt the best. then i edited the clips in after effects. and the sound was completely out of sync with the video. Should i get Premiere Elements for my mac to import the foot, get a new cable, or is there a way to fix it? I really need this.

i’m not at all familiar with premiere elements, and not too familiar with imovie, but i’m pretty sure imovie captures with dv (and i assume dv25). so if premiere elements works with a better codec, then it may capture at a better quality than imovie.
there is a setting in quicktime that may make the dv footage look better… open quicktime, select quicktime>preferences and check the option for ‘use high-quality video settings’. this little option is a holdover from when cpu speed was measured in mega-hz and ram was measured in mega-bytes… now-a-days the high quality preview setting shouldn’t effect performance.
as far as losing audio sync… does it lose sync in imovie or just ae?
if it is just ae, in ae select file>project settings and see if changing from drop frame to non-drop frame (or the other way around) has any effect. in the same panel, make sure the audio sample rate matches that of the footage (if you select the footage in the project panel it should tell you the audio rate).

one other thing i meant to mention…
if all you want to do is capture video you might look into quicktime pro… it’s only about $30 and it should allow you to capture from firewire (see if there is a way to make sure your camera is supported, but if imovie can capture from your camera, i would think quicktime pro would too). you’ll probably have more codecs available to capture too. you could also install third-party codecs, like the avid codecs (free to download). avid’s dv codec is better than apple’s dv, so it may give you better captures.

One more question, I uploaded with quicktime and my camera records by 720 by 480 and quicktimes biggest is 640 by 480. Is there something I can download for quicktime to make it the size i need? Thanks you again
