Where would I be without this kick ass forum?

OK, I got a brain teaser. My camera shoots in widescreen. I need to convert that footage to standard size (“full screen”) but also select which are I want to have as the full screen section.

So in other words. I want to maintain the ‘footage’ aspect ratio, but adjust the resolution ratio.

    Hopefully that makes sense…

When dropping widescreen footage on a 4:3 timeline, you have two choices.
One is to leave it alone in which case you end up with black bars on the top & bottom but you see the entire image.
The other is to open the Pan/Crop window, right-click and select Match Output Aspect (assuming the Pixel aspect ratio in your Project Properties is set to 0.9091 (NTSC DV) or 1.0926 (PAL DV).
This makes the event fill the screen at the expense of cutting off the sides, thereby losing a portion of your footage.
    The choice is yours.

It sounds like you want to use Mike’s second suggestion to Match Output Aspect. Then toggle the button on the left that limits your movement to just left and right, and then move the frame to include any action that may be cut off on one side or the other (if any action is cut off).
