I use Vegas 6.0 and I’m having issues with Quicktime (latest download vers. 7.6 NOT PRO)

Recently got a DVD from a client with raw footage on QT .mov files that they want me edit. So I downloaded the latest QT Player vers 7.6. Tried to preview the video on the DVD on PC and am having poor results. Opens with QT Player but the video starts and then freezes but the audio plays fine.

I stopped and closed the player and tried it several times..same thing. Closed and decided to try an import in Vegas. When I try to import, I get a message that says:
“The file format plugin for the specified format was not properly initialized.”

    Okay…. so I’m a dummy…anyone have a tip on what I need to do?
I don’t use QT and this is new territory for me.

    Help is much obliged,

    Chaz

Did you copy the files to your hard drive first?
If not, do so and then try playing them.

Thanks for the reply Mike. I copied the QT .mov to my array and opened file in Quicktime Player. Audio & Video played back fine except that they were out of sync. Not a biggie as I figured I could sync in Sony Vegas.

Closed the player and loaded Vegas, tried media import… no luck. Tried drag and drop, no luck. Still getting the “plugin not properly initialized” message.

I’ve seen a number of other forums where people had the same issue that were solved by loading the “tools” along with QT player. Now when I downloaded the Free QT, all I had was an install command. Did I miss something else?

    Thanks in advance,

    Chaz

It used to be that you had to install the “authoring tools” in QuickTime separately but I haven’t had to do that since (I think) version 7.0 of QT came along.

Did you do a restart of your computer after you installed QT?

Is this Movie Studio or Vegas Pro?

Are you running the latest version of Vegas 6 (6.0d as I recall)?

After installing QT 7.6, I rebooted PC. Still had same issues.
I have Sony Vegas Pro 6.0d build 210. Still have the plug-in not properly initialized message.

I’m stumped. I did a “repair” of QT in control panel and repeated process, still the same issue. Did an uninstall and repeated process…same issue.

Could my uninstall have affected any related plug-in? Is there a Quicktime plug-in in Vegas that could’ve been affected?

    I’m at a loss.

    Thanks,

    Chaz

OKAY…HERE’S MY SOLUTION: After reading other past-postings of others who’ve experienced my Quicktime in Sony Vegas issues, I centered on comments made by those in the know that past issues were because of not installing all the tools or items (plug-in, etc.) that would make the QT work in Vegas.

Problem is that with the “free” QT 7.6 player download, there wasn’t an option to “Custom Install” the software. So here’s what I did: I uninstalled the latest version of QT and search online for an older (semi-recent) version. Found Quicktime 6.5.2 player download. After downloading to a hard drive, I ran the installation but noticed I had a “CUSTOM” install feature. I selected custom and selected “ALL”.

Presto….everything works! I imported the QT .mov into Vegas 6.0 and rendered it out as a .mov as a test. No probs.

So it worked. I’m wondering if I did an “UPDATE” on the QT 6.5.2 to the latest QT 7.6, would everything still work? Dunno… I’m going to wait until after I finish this project and perhaps give it a go.

    Whew…. what a hassle.

    What a hassle is right.
    Good grief!!
I’m glad you found a workaround but have no idea why you had to go through that.
My (uneducated) guess is that, because it’s Vegas 6, it will only “play nice” with an older version of QT.

Thank you Charles. I am having similar problems. Hopefully your workaround will help!
