  Help! My comp’s are too confusing!

  I recently finished my first proper comissioned job with after effects. I usually just use it for single compositions and never work more than ten layers max, but this last job I had over 100 layers and everything was getting really chaotic! I was also having to sync to music, I usually do this in final cut but this time the edit was in a one off resolution 1648 x 471 so I decided to do it all in AE
  I also found the preview aspect of the software made the task of synching to sound less spontaneous, it looks like good use of after effects is in the planning and preperation?
  I am sure it is just the way I am going about my compositions, and I was hoping some of you out there may be able to point me in the direction of any interesting tutorials or dvds which focus on this area of AE? other than that I love the program, I just need help with my compositions and working to a music score.

  The “Planning your work” section of After Effects Help provides some tips, and it points to an excellent article by Aharon Rabinowitz here on the Creative COW website about planning your work.

  If, as you suggest, the non-real-time nature of rendering and playback is causing you problems, you might want to check out the “Improve performance” section, especially the part about improving performance by simplifying your project.
