I’m creating a video using Sony Vegas Pro 8 software. My footage is HDV from a Canon XH-A1. When I print HDV to Tape and view the footage on my HD TV, the quality and sharpness is great. Then after I render the footage (Main Concept MPEG-2, DVD ArchitectNTSC) and create a DVD using DVD Architect Pro 5, (Disk Format – DVD, MPEG2 &20×480-60i), the picture quality is not as good as other commercial DVDs that I’ve viewed. The picture seem to be soft.
Am I doing something wrong in Vegas or in DVD Architect? Are there setting I need to change?

Since your source is HDV, watching on an HD monitor will obviously be the best solution.
    But…
you’re rendering to an SD resolution, then upscaling that resolution to HD.
The SD will be softer than HD no matter what, when viewed on an HD monitor. Couple that with the difference in source resolution compared to SD resolution, it’s going to be softer anyway.
    So…
Render to one of the AVCHD templates in Vegas, assuming your DVD player can pass it properly to the HD monitor. This way, you’ll see little drop in quality.
