Audio Problem -Maybe Tape Drop Out? How Can I Fix?
I don’t know if there’s a fix for this but if there is I figured someone in this group would know the answer.
I was videotaping a musical play with semi-pro actors this weekend. When I got home and reviewed the tape there were small places in the audio that weren’t there. The audio would be playing fine and then no audio for like 1 second, then it would come back on for a few seconds and disappear again for a second.
This problem went on intermittently for the first 20 minutes or so of the tape. The picture had no problems at all.
Would there be anyway to somehow fill those blank spots?
This being a musical and this happening while they’re all singing away makes these audio gaps even more noticeable.
I guess I need a miracle to fix this. Anyone got one for me?

Try recapturing the problem section in the hope that it’ll work properly this time.
If that doesn’t work, try a head cleaning tape and then re-capturing the problem section.
If that doesn’t work, is the show still going on?
If it is, record these scenes again and hope that they’re close enough in sync that you can do a copy/paste of the problem areas. -

Thanks for your reply.
I tried recapturing, head cleaning, 2 different playback machines including the camera recorded on. It was a one time show. Nothing worked. Darn.
I guess I should feel fortunate that after all the video events I’ve recorded over the years this is the first time I’ve ever experienced this problem.

I am wondering if you hear it when you are playing the tape in the camera or if it only shows up after you transfer the footage. I have been working with the same kind of problem and I can hear mine on the play back in the camera and from what I am learning that is bad news. Hopefully yours is only heard after transfer. If you used two mics, after you have it transfered into Vegas try taking the audio all the way to the left and see if it still drops out and then all the way to the right, if your lucky it is only dropping on one mic/channel.

Different playback machines was going to be my next suggestion.
After all that, a bad tape is the only thing I can suggest as a possible problem. -
I figured bad tape also.
I guess I was hoping Vegas could perform a miracle and fill those tiny audio gaps. (Somehow?)

I’m afraid I hear it in the camera playback before I download it to the computer. Bad news for sure.

Mike, is there any chance that the missing notes are repeated (or close to being repeated) in a similar song?
If yes, then you might be able to “borrow” a section and replace the missing part.
I realize that this method is a real stab in the dark but it doesn’t sound like you have too many options.
Did anyone else have a camcorder running that night that you could borrow to do the same thing?
