I’m using HDV (from a Canon XH-A1) and the film is destined for festivals so there’s a chance it will be shown on a big screen.

Basically a few shots need to be zoomed in and cropped. But how far can I zoom in without producing pixelation? Is there a kind of rule-of-thumb I can use here?

Part of the problem is that the best I can view the final output is on a normal def TV so I won’t be able to tell until it’s actually projected…

    Any help appreciated!

Is your final render to an SD DVD?
If yes, as long as you don’t zoom in to less than SD size, I wouldn’t worry about it.
I’ve done (and authored) a lot of stuff that has been seen in a movie theatre and, as long as the source material is of decent quality, it’s always looked OK to me.

    Thanks for your suggestion, Mike.

As you might guess I’m fairly new to this end of things. I’m wondering though

    a) is rendering to SD going to give good enough quality for the big screen?

    b) when you say “as long as you don’t zoom in to less than SD size” how can I determine what that is?

    Cheers,

    Sean.

Sean, as long as your video is of decent quality (i.e. not really noisy to due poor lighting), it’ll look fine on a big screen.

    SD size is 720 x 480 and your HDV footage is, as I recall, 1440 x 1080.
This means that you can zoom in at least 2X before the image will start to show signs of degradation.
Let your eyes be the judge though as you can sometimes get away with even more zooming.

Thanks for your help with this. The video looks good so far so I’m quite pleased with that. Most scenes don’t need to go as far as 2x so it should work out fine.

    Cheers.
