Video on Timeline “black”
(Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0). ALL media is on the C drive. Some of the media is saved on the Desktop (C Drive in Properties)
Here is what I do when the issue occurs:
– Project/Import Media: Locate the short video clip (.AVI)and Import from my Jazz Elite HD Video Camcorder
-Drag the (e.g.30 sec) video clip onto the timeline
Occasionally I scroll down the timeline and place it there so I can work with it, without a lot of the other media in the immediate way.-“Split” the video into the segments I want by using the S command. Once I get these “sub”segments to the length I want I move them to their proper location on the timeline by either dragging or cut/paste. (The little videos I took have some unneeded parts so I need to break them up and recombine or just use the pieces needed).
The issue arises when I go to do a SAVE. I have been saving my project pretty frequently. The save menu prompts as follows:
File Name: 030809.vf
Save As Type: Vegas Movie Studio Project File (*.vf)
Below this is a little check box that I WAS marking: Copy Media with Project. But have now tried to Save and NOT mark and still the same error occursNext Window pops up with two options -Copy Media Options:
-Copy Source Media
-Create Trimmed Copies of Source MediaI have tried selecting each of these (on different saves) and no matter, when it is done saving, everything is great EXCEPT the sub-segments that I placed on the timeline (the ones that were cut) are now BLACK on the timeline, not visible in the preview window and seem to be completely gone.
Sometimes I get “media offline” other times I don’t but either way. when I reopen the project a black square represents where the video used to be and nothing plays.
If anyone can help me I would be so appreciative! Thank you!

Don’t use the Copy Media with Project option. This is probably what’s messing thing up. Start a new project, save it without copying media and see if when you open it again the clips are OK.

Hello- I tried it the way you said and when I reopened the file only the sound was there and the same ‘black box’ where the video should be. Do you think something is not activated? Also, it says the “Video is Offline” but it is in my c drive? Thank you very much!

PS: When I split a video and delete the piece I dont want, then save, I notice that the SAVED “final trimmed piece” (the one that I want to use) is being saved under the following directory: Vegas Movie Studio PE 9.0 Projects / Servais / child2 – 001 – 001 – 001 – 001.AVI IS this the correct location? Meaning, when I reopen a project after splitting video, save, close…when I reopen, does Vegas “know” to go to that location to “read” or use that edited piece of video? For some reason I feel like Vegas is not finding the edited video. When I import a video that needs ZERO editing, it shows back up every time I close/reopen. Thank you !!!!

OK, let’s start from the beginning:

The first step is to get organized. Having media on your desktop and all over the place is asking for trouble. Make a new folder for each project and place ALL of the media for that project in that folder.

This may be the source of your problem. The Jazz Elite HD Video Camcorder uses a non-standard video format. The best i could tell from the web is that it’s some form of MPEG4 which means it may be DivX or Xvid which Vegas does not support. Here is the statement that makes me say that:

This is “classic” for file formats that Vegas doesn’t support from $99 “gadget” cameras that don’t follow standards.
My guess is that you will need some other program to re-encode the files from your camera to make them compatible with Vegas or use whatever software the camera manufacturer gave you to edit the video. These cameras a great for capturing the fun and playing it back on your HDTV but they are terrible for editing.

I want to thank you for all your help. It seems the source of the issue and how to FIX for anyone who is interested is that you have to have ALL of your VIDEO in one folder and when you SAVE the .vf (while you are working on your project) you have to SAVE to the same FOLDER/LOCATION that your VIDEO is located in on your C drive.
There is also a workaround if you need a quick fix. Open a new project, import your media, edit your media, RENDER your media instead of just saving, close and then open your original project and import the rendered video file. This works too.
