  • Vegas for Professional TV Use?

Posted by Damian Coombe on March 4, 2009 at 4:30 pm

    Hi guys

I was just wondering whether Vegas is used at all in making TV spots, promos etc…

I realise that editing is not about the tools that you use but the vision on the person using them, however there seems to be a notion that everything for TV is done with Avid.

Are you aware of any companies that use Vegas for this type of production?

Are there any reasons that it might not be suitable for the task? As a professional radio producer I use Pro Tools mainly as a preference and believe that many other audio editors are just as capable. But I am unaware of the processes in video (its something I would like to get into one day, especially as I know a lot of my skills should translate), I assume it can output at the same quality and is able to produce a broad range of effects?

In terms of passing on the product to the client, would this be done in a video file, or would you need to give the client the actual project? As if the latter was the case it might be an idea to look into other options for compatibility.

    Thanks for taking the time

Vegas is used daily for cutting national TV spots, packages for broadcast, field editing of clips for broadcast, etc.
Delivery is usually in a digital format, but there are a few clients still wanting Beta SP for delivery.
HDD, tape, DVD, web…these are all common delivery mechanisms.

The list of people using Vegas for broadcast production is fairly long, some of the Belo Group stations use Vegas, CSN, Nightline, LaRaza, Discovery providers, Food Channel, even MTV for some package work.

Rarely is a project delivered as a project; it’s usually delivered as a finished product.
“Everything” for TV is no longer done with Avid, many tools have made their way into the workspace as Avid continually prices and features themselves out of the market. Final Cut, Edius, Premiere, Vegas are all commonly found in broadcast houses.

Indeed Damian….Vegas is used quite frequently for Television
and broadcast media: Many have it in combination with other NLE’s
    in there workflow.

Sony Vegas Professional is an incredible product. How come we don’t find a clearing house or list of Vegas Productions anywhere on the web? Avid, Apple and the others seem to be very open on bragging on their respective stuff.

Sony needs to step it up here. Maybe at NAB we can hear some stuff. Surviver man last year was cool in Vegas, and the guy that did the Audio for Speed Racer using Sound Forge and Acid.

Our Studio has used Vegas for TV spots and a one hour weekly syndicated show for some time. It is dependable, fast and it works

    Hi guys…

Thanks for setting me straight on this.

Vegas feels right to me, especially as I have been told I can map the keyboard to my own settings, which will help a lot as I can make it match Pro Tools, which will mean I will be speeding across the editing window!

Remember that vegas is also an excellent and professional
audio editing tool and DAW also….i use it to composite all my
layered music tracks and final mastering right there in vegas,
with the only need most times to go to soundforge to remove certain glitches.

    Kevin,

Could you briefly state what your work flow is for Broadcast? What do you acquire on and what do you deliver on using Vegas? Also what hardware if any is needed for final output? I have been trying to find others who do broadcast but it hasn’t been easy.

    Hi DSE & Steve,

Are you guys attending NAB this year. I know DSE will be there. Last year was Surviver man and Speed Racer as mentioned above. What’s Sony planning on doing this year for NAB 2009?

That’s very true. I did sound design on a doc. using Vegas.
I had 18 tracks humming along with very cool dynamics control and SFX.
Vegas was an original product from Sonic Foundry.
