I really need some help. I’ve never gone online for help before, so if I don’t supply any need information, I’m sorry. Just ask for it and I will supply it.

Anyway, I’m working in Sony Vegas 7.0d on a video that is 2 hours long. It’s actually a documentary for a client, so I seriously need help. I only have 2 layers because I edited and rendered the whole thing in sections and then placed the sections together in a new Vegas file. My problem is that I’m having serious problems rendering.

It usually does one of the following three things.

    1. I start the render and once it reaches 1% a window pops-up saying that “Vegas has had an error”. Which, of course, does not allow me to render the video because once I click “Ok” Vegas closes.

    2. I start the render and come back to find no signs of Vegas. It has completely closed and the process isn’t even running anymore.

    3. I start the render and it gets up around 45%-50%, then a window pops up saying, “An unknown software exception (0x0000409) occurred in…” (I don’t remember where it occurred).

Anyway, I have a deadline (which I haven’t gone over yet) so I need to get this rendered for review. Also, I thought it might be my memory or hard drive space that was the problem (I had really low memory and was low on hard drive space), so I bought another memory card which I checked and have installed correctly. I also bought an external hard drive and freed up most of my computers internal hard drive. Also, I’m on an Acer Aspire E700 (I believe) running Windows XP. Any help will be much appreciated! Thank you!

What format did you render them too? Maybe Vegas is having a hard time with this format?

I rendered them in Vegas using .WMV format. So, I don’t think that could be the problem, could it?

Thanks for the quick response! I need help!

Could be… WMV is a final format for delivery and not ideal for editing. What is the source of the original footage? If this is an SD project you should be rendering to DV AVI files. If it’s HD you should be using CineForm. You can edit both of these over formats and over in Vegas with no appreciable loss in quality.

WMV is not good for editing because it is a compressed encoded file. When I have a need to reduce the complexity of my timeline, I go to tools and “render to new track” and use the Windows AVI preset.

If your computer keeps crashing at random locations, clean out the dust bunnies.

Since WMV is an encoded format, Vegas has to reconstruct *every* frame (with some loss of quality) before it can be edited or rendered into a new AVI file. That is very heavy duty for the processor and it will run hotter than normal.

Thanks a lot for your quick responses guys! I didn’t know that much about .WMV, so I didn’t know it would be a problem. I’m going to render the video in a different format and try it once more. Again, thank you so much!
