  Scanning and Importing Photos

  Hi All,

  Working on home movies, mpeg-2 dv quality (Sony Vegas Pro 8.0).

  What is the best way to scan and import photos to Sony Vegas with good quality for dvd, but not ridiculously large files?

  I’m scanning as bitmap, 600 dpi, cropping in adobe photoshop and then saving image as jpeg-medium quality to bring into vegas. Does doing it this way make sense or should I be saving at higher quality or different format?

  Vegas likes PNG files and no bigger than 1440 X 960.

  I agree with Allen on the use of PNG files, especially because (unlike JPEG), it’s a loseless codec which means repeated saves won’t alter the original image.

  Unless the original images are 1″ x 1″ or you’re doing really deep zooming,, 600 dpi is far too large a setting.
  When I work with 6″ x 4″ images (standard picture size), I usually scan them at 150 dpi and save them as PNGs.
  My rule of thumb is 1″ = 100 pixels at 100 dpi.
  Therefore, a 6″ x 4″ image scanned at 150 dpi is 900 pixels x 600 pixels.
  I find that this allows me to zoom in 2X and still maintain image quality.
  If I want to zoom more than that, I’ll increase the dpi as needed.

  Vegas likes jpg, tga, and png file formats, and prefers they not be larger than 2000 pixels in any direction. However, if you do have a couple of larger images, it normally is not a deal-breaker, depending on your machine specifications.
