  • Audio Sync Issue

    Sony Vegas 8.0c

When I insert an uncompressed MPEG video into the timeline, the audio is off by about 5 secs during the playback and the render.

The audio is fine if I edit it in WMM or when I play it using WM Player.

Anyway to fix this without ungrouping the audio and fixing it manually?

Also, Is there a way to add an project wide Video Event/Pan Crop effect?

There is no such thing as “uncompressed MPEG video”. MPEG is a compression scheme and by definitions is compressed. So I’m not sure what kind of file you actually have. If Vegas can’t play it back in sync and WMM can play it, then perhaps you can render it with WMM into a format the is more edit friendly for Vegas (like DV AVI). Normally, Vegas has absolutely no problem syncing MPEG audio on the timeline so something else is wrong with this file and causing Vegas play it back incorrectly.

There is no project wide Pan/Crop. There are scripts that can apply a Pan/Crop to all events or you can nest the project into another project and apply Pan/Crop to the nested project. (Like using pre-comps in After Effects)

Sorry my bad on the uncompressed mpeg file but here is the output when I open the file with Gspot:

    Video
    Codec: MPEG2
    Name: MPEG-2

    Audio
    Codec: MPEG-1 Layer 2
    Info: 0xc0:48000Hz 384 kb/s tot , Stereo

Everything looks normal so could it be a setting in Vegas?

Thanks for the information about the project wide pan/crop event. I will definitely the nested solution because I have alot of clips in my video (I am making a video game montage)

One thing to try is to match the project to the file and see if that helps. In the project properties and use the Match Media Settings button (folder icon next to the template name) to match the project settings to the file. Otherwise, I can’t imagine what it might be.

I’m having this exact same issue. Thanks for the response, John, but I’m afraid that doesn’t work either.

I open a new project and import a standard MPEG file. The file is about 485,000 KB in size, and according to Vegas is recorded @ 29.97 FPS in MPEG-2 format, NTSC DV Widescreen.

    Attributes are 720 X 480 X 32, 22,486.

    Audio: MPEG Layer 2, 48,000 Hz, 22,496.943

You should know I have no idea what these numbers mean. 🙂 Just trying to help you help us.

The video file plays fine in ANY other playback software. But stick it in Vegas and suddenly the video plays back about twice as fast as the audio, making editing impossible.

I’ve started a service ticket with Sony to see what they say, but so far I’m getting the standard runaround. Turn this and that off, etc. Nothing they’ve suggested works. Frustrating that the problem seems so rare.

I edited these exact same files in Sony Vegas Platinum 8 (free trial) with NO issues. Then naturally, I pay for the software and boom… doesn’t work.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance,

    Hey guys,
i tried something which worked…but i dont know if this is solution for all video formats….

Unlink the audio layer from video…and delete the audio layer.

Use any program to extract the audio from the video file – i extracted it as a WAV file.

import the wav file as the audio layer….

    and render….

    the output was alright…

but now i am facing another problem! 🙁 Vegas closes without any warnings during rendering….

    hope this was useful….

    Hmmmm.

yeah I can see how that would work. I don’t really want to bandaid this though.

My workaround wasn’t any better… I converted the original file to another format (I converted to .mov). The quality was significantly degraded in the process, so I’m not excited. I haven’t tried other formats.

So far, Sony continues to give bland attempts at solving this. I wonder how many people are having this problem…? For me, it’s only with mpeg-2 encoded stuff from my hava recording device.

    Hi Guys,

I ended up rendering the original clips in windows movie maker as DV-AVI and then importing them in sony vegas where the audio was in sync with the video.

It is a two step process but it was better than unlocking the audio and syncing it manually.

    Hope this helped.

I am having the same problem with the video at twice the speed as the audio but it’s wierd cause it was working before…i reset all the the settings in Sony Vegas but no luck. Im most likely going to uninstall and reinstall and see if that has any effect…
