Was in a long discussion with some colleges yesterday on
this topic and felt like sharing my two cents on the matter
of the two process of color correction and color grading,
because some believe they are names given to the same process.

When you alter the colors of a video to match a real life
scenario tweaking the levels and balances to let the image pops
and looks pleasing…then that is called color correction.

When you alter the colors of the video to make it different and
more dramatic than in a real world scenario….that is called
    color grading.

Sounds like it could be one of those gray areas whereas it would depend on what the editors intentions were. It would be hard to define when the line is crossed as to say that the process is color grading and not color correction. Certainly we all know when we see a clip that is purposely pushed to create a dramatic affect but the more subtle ones perhaps not. It would be confusing at best and disastrous at worst to edit under direction that uses the two synonymously. In my main employ the cost of making those type of mistakes can take a serious toll on a much more personal level. So we are mandated and regulated to be all talking the same language. As a result I tend to apply those principals to any endeavor I am involved in, it helps me not make as many mistakes. Thanks as always for all the great advice.

Actually it depends on what you name “correct”.
I sometimes use color corrector tool to turn the leaves of a tree into blue. 🙂
