  • Stitch old DVD chapters together without re-rendering

I’m pulling all of the old home movies I’ve made over the years off of DVD and back into standalone files that can be played on the computer, ps3 etc.. (one DVD may have 4 or 5 distinct home movieson it) I’m using Vegas 8.1 on Vista 64, although I’m sure it works the same in other versions to “Import DVD Campcorder Disc”. This results in mpeg2 files with an .mpg extension for each movie and in almost all cases this has worked for me…. that was until I encountered a disc that apparently had “chapters” within each movie. The chapters cause Vegas to create a new file for each chapter so rather than having a single file that represents the whole movie I’ve got numerous files for each. What I had hoped to do in these situations was stitch each of the resulting files to recreate the single movie approach but unfortunately I cannot find a combmination of Mainconcept MPEG2 rendering options that will do so without recompression, something I don’t want to do. Since I’m running Vista64 I try to be very careful about what I install to avoid any potential compatibility problems and wanted to see if anyone else has overcome this issue and if so how.

Ideally I’d like to tell Vegas to ignore chapters during import but I wasn’t able to find that option. My second choice would be to stitch together each piece on the timeline and export without re-rendering and if I have to as a last resort I’ll go over to videohelp and look for some type of mpeg2 editor that works with Vista64.

    Suggestions are appreciated.

you could also drop them into DVDA and set the end destination for each chapter to be the subsequent chapter. done it before, and only hiccup is slight pause as it changes chapter – very slight.

if you don’t want to see the individual chapters in the menu, just drop the first one on the menu, and subsequent chapters into the root of the DVD.

easily done, and no recompressing necessary.

    Hi Adam,

Thanks for the help. My original note may not have been clear. My final destination isn’t DVD but rather a standalone .mpg files. Lets say for example I have an older DVD with a video from a Hawaii vacation and a video from a dance recital. While importing the video into Vegas Pro 8.1 I’ll end up with numerous .mpg files for the Hawaii vacation, since it had chapters within it, and a single file for the dance recital. What I’d like to do is stitch together the multiple files from the Hawaii vacation so the end result is a single .mpg file. In Vegas I can usually do this type of thing without re compression if the source and selected output format match. While rendering it will say re compression not needed or something along those lines. But in this case it wants to re compress no matter what MainConcept options I choose. Hopefully that makes the issue clearer.

Run a Google search for a program called VOBMerge. It does what you need, and it’s free.

..videoredo is excelent for combine or “join” multiple mpg files..altough I’m not sure if it’s compatible with Vista 64 …

    good luck

    Enrique –

Thanks for the excellent suggestion. I don’t know what I was thinking since I actually have a license for VideoReDo TV Suite and had used it for this very type of thing a year ago. Vista64 has me gun shy I guess and I’m trying to limit what software I have installed because of it. I downloaded the latest version and luckily my registration key still works with it.

    Thanks,

    Paul
