ACVHD new camera
I know this is a Vegas forum, but I’m very interested on hearing opinions (from the Vegas experts) about the best option for a new AVCHD camera. We’re thinking on one of these for small jobs and maybe as an alternate B cam.
Our decision is between the small Sony HR11 (or CX12), the Canon HF11 or maybe Panasonic. Are these cameras really as good as the reviews sometimes said ? yes, I know are classified as “consumer” grade but I see some very interesting things to explore instead of buying another HDV: how do the cams compare to classic 3CCD miniDV cameras ? (considering DVD final production), how is the workflow in Vegas, is the Canon AVCHD recognized by Vegas?, how is their low light performance ? …. anything can be very helpful to take our decision…kind regards

I have three Canon HG10s. Sony Vegas 8 pro imports its AVCHD footage. Great cameras, has 30GB hard drive storage. JK

Thank you John. But how do these cameras compare for example to miniDV (3CCD) for DVD production ? Have you used with adapters (wide) ? are these small cams worth their price ?

Remember that the “RED” camera is a one chip camera. I have a Sony V1 (3 chip CMOS 1/4″). Generates great pictures in HDV, Hi Res. and great color. The Canon HG10 creates nearly as good pictures. I often intermix HG10 and V1.
When you edit in AVCHD and render MPG2 off the timeline, the resulting DVD (720×480) is excellent, nearly as good as HI. Def.

1 chip, 3 chip…makes no difference, not really. Not anymore. Those days of “I have a 3chip this or that” meaning the owner had a superior camera….they’re gone. No matter what else one might say is wrong with the RED, the fullsize, single sensor isn’t in that discussion (or shouldn’t be).

I have the CX12 you were asking about and the images are great in day-light. Really impressive and I can highly recommend it for what it is. Low-light is a whole other thing with ALL of these small CCD/CMOS cameras. That’s really the thing. As Douglas said, it’s not whether they have 1 or 3 but how large are the sensors. The smaller the sensor and higher the pixel count, the worse low light sensitivity due to pixel size. So my Sony my HDR-CX12 does not compare to my HVR-A1U which doesn’t compare to my HVR-Z1U, but in day-light you can intercut all of these HD cameras fairly well.
What made me choose the Sony CX12 over the Canon was the manual dial on the front. I’m a big fan of hardware knobs and dials and there is a dial on the front with a button that you can push to cycle the dial between manual Focus, Exposure, AE Shift, & WB Shift. This is similar to the exposure dial on the front of my Z1 and I love not having to play with the menus for these basic functions which are now at my fingertips.

thank you so much for the comments….. considering that the small cam may be used as a “B” one maybe I’ll go for the new Canon HF11 because I’m not a big fan of Memory sticks and the Canon also has a Flash (32G) internal memory instead of Sony’s HDD (which also I don´t like it) for inmediate big recording times …the ring option is very nice but you can never have it all !!
