Sony VRD-MC5 DVDirect DVD Recorder
Does anyone out there own or have experience with the Sony VRD-MC5 DVDirect DVD Recorder? To quote from Sony info – “The DVDirect supports Sony’s AVCHD high-definition video format. It can capture and compress this video format using H.264, allowing you to put up to 95 minutes of HD video onto a standard DVD. This disc can be played back in 1080i resolution on Blu-ray disc players.” We have been using the earlier version of this unit (no AVCHD Support) with ur DV cameras, for a 2 years now, recording simultaneously to standard DVD via firewire. For some field work, we have both DV tape and and DVD when finished. There have even been some instances where we imported the DVD straight into Vegas for a quick edit, along with a bit of quality loss, without having to capture from tape. We record straight to a laptop via DV Rack as well. Wondering what the quality is like when using this new unit and playing it back on a BluRay player.

John, I don’t have one of these units but 95 minutes is a long time for AVCHD on a DVD. I just got my Sony HDR-CX12 yesterday and I was shocked to find that the default setting was set to 9MB bit rate! What were they thinking? The camera is capable of 16MB and they set it to 9MB by default? (probably because they only give you a skimpy 4GB memory card and they wanted it to look like you had more record time) It also has the capability to record at 6MB!!! So when Sony says you can fit “up to” 95 minutes, I’m guessing that this is only possible if you record AVCHD at 6MB and not at the full 16MB, which is probably what you would want to be shooting at. This is just a guess but the numbers make sense and would fit 95 minutes of AVCHD on DVD media.

I went out and bought one of these over the Holiday and the quality is exactly the same as what you shot. It just copies the source AVCHD files over from your memory card. If you use 4GB memory cards, this is a great way to archive each one to DVD at full quality.
John, Thanks for bringing this unit to my attention. It was a very worthwhile purchase.
