So we have the wonderful EX3, and wonderful it is… but I’m trying to figure out what to do with it once it’s on a Vegas timeline. Sure it can be edited and viewed just like SD clips, it downconverts to SD quite well, and I can output Bluray or WMV HD files. But where else can it go? I’ve already decided there’s no way to export a clip from Vegas that can go back onto the SxS memory card for playback from the EX3 (so as to watch on a plasma screen or whatever). I’m also having serious issues with doing timeline prerenders so a project can be watched a full frame rate playback. The choices for prerender file formats is very limited compared to what Vegas will actually import onto a timeline.

I’m shooting mainly 720p24 with the EX3. Is there another shooting format that’s more timeline-friendly as far as exporting to Bluray or doing prerenders on the timeline? Any flavor of MXF doesn’t work. When I try to prerender a 720p24 HDV timeline, the only choices I have are 1080 60i, 50i, and 24p. Each selection once executed causes Vegas to sit there for a considerable amount of time then crashes. I had to make a HDV 720p24 profile because Vegas didn’t come with one. I’m trying that now for prerender, but I’m concerned about it’s compressed audio (not compressed on timeline obviously).

I’m using Vegas 8c with XP pro, 4GB of RAM. It’d be nice if Vegas could output the same files and framerate that it can import. Of course I can’t complain that much… a co-worker using the newest version of Avid Media Composer can’t import any video from the EX3 unless the framerate matches the framerate of his timeline, it has no provisions that he’s found to letterbox, edgecrop, etc., so he’s found the best way to use 24p HQ video from the camera is to record it onto a tape via SDI. Yay for tapeless workflow!

Well at least I figured out one small issue on my own… I guess using the AVI 720p24 intermediate setting. I’m sure there’s some quality loss, and I’m not sure why Vegas can’t render what it can import and use on a timeline. Maybe future versions will support the XDCAM EX stuff better. I’m still up for opinions. Thanks.
