I’ve spent a couple of hours with a test video trying to find the ideal format for videos to save to my hard drive and watch on my PC. I am hoping to get some guidance here on what I should try as this can be quite time consuming. I’ve tried mpeg-2, wmv and some mp4 settings.

Any suggestions on what is a good balance between video quality and file size for standard definition (miniDV) video from a camcorder? I am not interested in burning DVDs. I would like the rendered video to be as close in quality to the original captured AVI as possible. I would not like to have more than about 5 G per hour of video.

Which format and settings do you suggest?

    Thanks!
