I’m placing text on top of a video clip (fairly abstract, purchased from iStockphoto.com). I want to in effect freeze the video at certain points to allow more time for the text to be displayed in a portion of the screen where there’s a vacant space.

It appears there a couple of approaches to freezing a frame I can take:
    1. Apply a velocity envelope and set it to 0 for as long as I need the action to stop.
    2. Make a frame of the video into a still image, and put it in place of (or on top of ) the video.

The velocity envelope is puzzling to me, because I’m not sure I notice it really stopping or slowing the video, even when set to 10% or 0%.

    The still image works.

Is there another way to hold on a video frame for a few seconds?

    Thanks.

Some folks like stopping the vid down to 0, I prefer to create a full-rez still and drop it on for the desired length. It also affords some other, easier options for FX, IMO.
If you’re not seeing it slow to 0 from whatever speed, you’ve got something set up incorrectly in your envelope. Right click the node/envelope point to set it to a particular speed.

Thanks! I tried again, and the velocity envelope works. I appreciate your note that the still image may be better in some ways, however.

    Thanks.
