Vegas upgrades
Just to put to rest all the guess work, conjecture, and personal opinions.
I just installed the Vegas Pro 8.0a AND DVD-A 4.5a “Update” that I purchased from TigerDirect. As I mentioned in my post on the Sony Vegas forum, it cost $129+ship+tax=$148. The single DVD comes in a nice plastic box with a serial number card. A savings of over $100 if I upgraded from Sony.
It is an “Upgrade” from versions 6 &7 of Vegas “pro” and DVD-A.
I upgraded from Vegas 6 and DVD-A 3, with no problems. I have even downloaded and installed Vegas Pro 8.0c and DVD-A 5.
Three points of caution:
1. Have your old Vegas 6 or 7 and DVD-A installed prior to installing the upgrade.
2. Uninstall any Vegas 8 and DVD-A trial versions prior to installing the upgrade.
3. Insert you serial numbers into V8 and DVD-A 4.5 BEFORE downloading and installing V8.0c and DVD-A 5.Charlie

What I have read is that there are different bundles of Vegas upgrades. If you upgrade from Sony, you never need your previous key and, in fact, you can legally sell your previous version and transfer the license to the buyer. If, however, you buy an upgrade that’s not from the Sony site, you’ll need your previous license key to install the upgrade. I don’t know if that also means that you cannot sell your previous version since you will need the key every time you install it in the future.
Having never bought an upgrade like this (I’ve only read about the experience) I too am interested in the experience the original poster had.

To clarify my previous original post, answer and ask some questions:
I use two desktops, 1 with XP for administrative and everything else, and 1 with Vista strictly for video work. I sometimes want to try out a “Vegas” idea without having to start up my editing computer. I use Vegas on one cpu at a time. My original post was concerning my XP machine.
Prior to purchasing this “Upgrade”, I always purchased my Vegas +DVD from Sony.
To explain the 3 issues:
#1. If you don’t have versions 6 or 7 of Vegas “pro” or DVD-A, you will get a prompt that you don’t have Vegas 7 installed and you need to reinstall it first. (It doesn’t mention Vegas 6, but that’s what I have and it takes it as well.) More on this with Vista later.#2. Prior to installing this upgrade, I used successfully (on both cpu) Vegas 8 and DVD-A5 trial versions until the 30 days ran out. If you don’t uninstall these, you will get prompted that you already have a newer version installed, and I believe the installation ends there.
#3. If you don’t do this one, you will keep getting the “do you want to buy” startup screen from the trial version and the programs won’t start.
Now regarding installation on my Vista machine:
Prior to installing the upgrade: I uninstalled the trial versions. I only had installed DVD-A3, and NEVER had Vegas 6 installed on Vista because it wasn’t supposed to be incompatible with Vista.So, the first upgrade I installed was DVD-A4.5 since I had DVD-A3 on the cpu. It installed, registered it, and upgraded it to DVD-A5 with no problem.
When I tried to install Vegas8.0a, I got a prompt that I don’t have Vegas 7 installed and I need to reinstall it first. (It doesn’t mention Vegas 6, but that’s what I have and it takes it as well.)
But here’s where it got interesting.
When installing Vegas 6, I believe I got a “it may be incompatible with Vista” message, but I went on with the install.
Next I got a Sony message that the install didn’t finish.
Next, I got another message that I needed to install NET framework 1.1
Next, I got another message that I needed to install NET framework SP 2 I believe.
after those installed, I clicked on the “install Sony Vegas6” to see if I can get it to “finish”.
At this point it insisted on installing Microsoft SQL server desktop engine Media manager software.
I thought I may have clicked the wrong link, so I canceled that and reinserted the Sony DVD to “install Sony Vegas6” to see if I can get it to “finish”.
It wasn’t my mistake, it insisted on installing Microsoft SQL server desktop engine Media manager software, so I let it.
This too gave me “it may be incompatible with Vista” message, but I went on with the install.
Vegas 6 installed, and I registered it …..again with Sony.
After this I installed Vegas Pro 8.0a, registered it, and upgraded it to Vegas pro 8.0c with no problem.My question is: I ran Vegas 8 trial without having NET framework 1.1 installed in Vista and I don’t like having unnecessary programs on my computer. Is it safe to uninstall these: NET framework 1.1, Vegas 6, and Microsoft SQL server desktop engine Media manager software?

Yes. Vegas 6 used earlier versions of all of these that Vegas Pro 8 doesn’t need (and won’t work with anyway)

O.K. I see,
vegas pro 8 needs .net framework 3 so uninstalling version 1.1
and all the others you mentioned is perfectly safe.
